Our first birds came from George Mihalik. We purchased two chicks from another show person in April of 2006. I no longer have them. We thought we would have a little something to play with until we went for our other chicks in June. By June we were making the trip to pick up my birds. Of course I met an acquaintance that wanted the same birds.I believe the saying is a mouse in your pocket? Maybe its a louse in your pocket? I should have seen that one coming ... I know better now.I am still amazed to what strides people will take to hurt others and what they will do just for the win. Pretty funny stuff but also sickening. A large amount of birds were purchased including some pretty important breeders. My family only came home with chicks to start. Takota came home with several gifts from George Mihalik and this is why you will see in this website how she has some of the better birds! I was not after birds to show on this trip but others were . We are firm believers of raising your own birds to show.
Aside from what is stated below there is no other stock left here of outside breeding. It was all gone by early fall of last year and was not anything that added to our flock.
We raised those chicks and did show a few. I do not have a problem with showing a few of the newly purchased birds because it is a way of seeing your birds next to others and how they stack up. Keeping it real is very important because it's not a matter of how well your new birds did at the shows it's a matter of how well the offspring do at the shows in the years to come. There were several trips made to Georges by others that year and I was able to buy a few more breeders of his lines second hand to add to my pens. Most of these birds were wearing his bands and they will remain here and not be in the show rings. It is not easy raising good birds and it takes a lot of work. Buying a winner is nothing but raising a few good ones makes it all worth while.Anything we ever won with a bought bird has never really been considered a win in our eyes.
We also purchased a lot of birds from Rhea Dean Carter. He made several purchases from George in 2005 - 2006. Some of our main cocks came from him later in 2007 and they have added great things to my birds.
We should also add earlier in 2006 we bought two cockerels that came from Hattrick stock.A nice old neighbor had them. We still have one and he is a pet of ours.If another great home for him came along I would consider it but he is pretty special to us.Speaking of pets my husband has a pet rooster also. The bird goes by Moe. He was the bird used to create the Hi Ho logo.
This year we will be acquiring a few more birds to what we have already added . George has sent me wonderful birds to work with this year and we will be receiving birds from Kathy Dills in Ohio. After this point we believe we are good for the year unless its more lavender or porcelain birds. Oh but you never know something else may come up I just have to have! We are not a firm believers in buying the perfect birds either because if the genes are there you can create your own. Actually I would like to see a flawless bird because it's always about a persons own perspective on what that is.
With the help of George and many others we are learning to price our birds in a fair manner. We are all learning and giving an honest appraisal on a bird is pretty important. The chicken auctions are not always the best way to appraise anything because in that case its a supply and demand issue and what the market will hold. If someone is willing to outbid another over birds that is super and it should be an important part of selling our chickens but it can also be another way of causing a problem. For those that love to buy on auctions or those that are new to the auctions please talk to others before you purchase I am sure there is solid information out there regarding some of the sellers. I see many sellers try very hard to be honest but sometimes things are missed and that creates and issue for them. Also there is the buyer that has strange expectations of the bird because of specific bloodlines and watch yourself because not only are some sellers extremely dishonest but even the best breeders in the country have culls , culls make great breeders sometimes so its all once again perspective.
